Energy efficiency in government agencies can begin with the Utility Savings Initiative (USI), a comprehensive, multi-programmed approach to reduce utility expenditures and resource use in state buildings. Local governments, K-12 schools and community colleges can benefit from USI programs.

  1. Alter settings of heating and cooling systems seasonally to save 1 to 3% of cooling or heating costs for each degree the thermostat is raised or lowered.
  2. During the winter, set the thermostat to 68ºF when the work place is occupied and 65ºF after business hours.
  3. Turn off all office equipment. If you can't turn off the whole computer, turn off the monitor and the printer.
  4. Open blinds and shades. Turn off lights in unoccupied areas or in spaces with sufficient natural lighting.
  5. When purchasing PCs, monitors, printers, fax machines and copiers, consider Energy Star models that "power down" after a user-specified period of inactivity.
