Foundations with a focus on North Carolina

Golden Leaf Foundation (value-added agriculture and rural development awards)
The Foundation's Articles of Incorporation state the Foundation is to use funds "to provide economic impact assistance to economically affected or tobacco-dependent regions of North Carolina." No geographic area is excluded from applying for a grant, and applications will not be disqualified for that reason. However, the foundation gives priority to projects that will benefit those counties that are tobacco-dependent or economically affected.

Weyerhaeuser Foundation (waste management awards)
Community Giving - Awards to programs in communities where Weyerhaeuser has major facilities and where company employees have a presence. Grants are usually awarded to programs that make a significant difference in the quality of life in these communities.
Industry-Related Giving - Awards to educational institutions, environmental groups and professional organizations that promote further understanding of how the forest products industry responds to a changing society.

The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation
DDCF Climate Change Initiative
The DDCF has launched a $100-million grant-making initiative to help build a clean-energy economy that can reduce the threat of global climate change to people and the environment. The five-year initiative is focused on accelerating the adoption of available, practical approaches to reducing carbon emissions. The goal is to develop policies to bring off-the-shelf and new clean-energy technologies to market faster—including everything from building codes to policies that put a price on carbon.

Kresge Foundation
Green Building Program (green building, design)
With the launch of its Green Building Initiative, The Kresge Foundation is encouraging nonprofit leaders to examine their planning and design processes so that they can assess the environmental impact of their facilities - and the Foundation is adding the incentive of planning and bonus grants that are available on a limited basis.

Energy Foundation
The Energy Foundation works to reduce carbon emissions from the electric and gas utility industry by advancing energy efficiency and renewable energy. The primary focus is on state and regional opportunities.
